The Matchmaker Process

terrier.jpgWhen you decide to adopt with WAG, our commitment is to find the animal that best matches your personality, lifestyle and experience.

For approved applicants, WAG offers a customized and personalized adoption experience following our MatchMaker Process. It includes:

  • A pre-adoption counseling session
  • Post-adoption counseling within the first month of adoption

It's best to come in person, so we can meet you, you can meet us, and we can visit your potential new pet together. If you live out of town and you've found your perfect new companion at WAG, please call or email at adoptions@WhistlerWAG.com.  We can discuss the suitability of the match over the phone or by email, and complete the application process via email or fax, prior to your visit to the shelter. Adoptions may sometimes be completed with a single visit to the WAG shelter.

MatchMaker Process Steps

The following steps help WAG learn what is wonderful about your personality and lifestyle. It is also designed to help you learn more about which animal would be a perfect match for you.

Step 1

Consider the ways in which you will meet the lifelong needs of a pet:

  • Planning for expenses
  • Time for walks, training, attention and play
  • Children are of an appropriate age
  • Consider how possible life changes such as moving, changing your work schedule, starting a family, going back to school etc. could affect your ability to provide good care

Step 2

Think about the characteristics you would like in a pet. Energetic? Mellow? Playful?

Step 3

Visit the shelter often and get to know the animals. We prefer that all family members meet the animals and make a decision together.

Step 4

When you find a cat or dog that you think is right for you, fill out an adoption application for that animal. You will need:

  • Your landlord's phone number (if you rent your accommodations)
  • Two non-personal references (employer or people you have pet sat for are good examples)
  • Your veterinarian's name and phone number (for current and past pets)

Step 5

Meet with a WAG staff member who will help you to ensure you make the best match.
