How to become a WAG volunteer:

1. Complete the appropriate Volunteer Application.  You may also obtain a printed copy from the shelter.

2. Once you have filled it out, scan and email it to wag@whistlerwag.com or drop it off at the shelter. If we are closed, we now have a secure DROP BOX located at the front door!

3. If you do not hear back within a couple of weeks, call us! 604-935-8364.

4. If needed, our Volunteer Coordinator will invite you to attend a scheduled Orientation Session, where you will tour the shelter, fill out a volunteer agreement and waiver of liability, and learn about your responsibilities as WAG Volunteer.


Eligible candidates must be 18 years of age or over.

Volunteers will attend an Orientation Session prior to starting these shifts:

Opening Assistant: 8:00am to 9:00am

  1. Assist with feeding of breakfast of the cats, providing fresh water
  2. General socialization with shelter dogs and cats
  3. Doing dishes and laundry
  4. Emptying/washing litter boxes
  5. Assisting staff with cleaning of cat rooms (With clean blankets/fresh water/toys/litter box/etc)
  6. Other cleaning (May include vacuuming/dusting/etc)
  7. Assisting staff with any other tasks needed

Closing Assistant: 4:30pm - 5:30pm

  1. General socialization with shelter dogs and cats
  2. Assisting with feeding cats dinner, providing fresh water
  3. Spot clean litter boxes
  4. Dishes and laundry
  5. Other cleaning (May include vacuuming/dusting/etc)
  6. Assisting staff with any other tasks needed

Cat Enrichment: 11:00am to 12:00pm

  1. Grooming/brushing of cats
  2. Treat training exercises
  3. Socialization (play, cuddles, story time)
  4. Minor cleaning of the cat rooms 
  5. Monitoring cat behaviour/progress and reporting to staff

Dog Walking: 10am to 11:00am or 5:00pm to 6:00pm

  1. Interaction with dogs: handling/grooming/hand feeding
  2. Physical stimulation (walking, fetch)
  3. Socialization (play, cuddles, story time)
  4. Monitoring of dog behavior and communicating with staff

Dog Enrichment: 10am to 11:00am or 5:00pm to 6:00pm

  1. Interaction with dogs/handling and grooming of dogs
  2. Hand feeding or treat training
  3. Mental games/stimulation
  4. Physical stimulation (walking, fetch)
  5. Monitoring of dog behaviour and communicating with staff

Shelter Volunteer Commitment

Thank you for your interest in our shelter volunteer program. Our volunteer program is designed to offer the best care and welfare for our animals. In order to offer the best experience for you and the animals, a regular commitment will be required for Shelter Volunteers. IF A VOLUNTEER IS INACTIVE FOR TWO MONTHS, THEY WILL AUTOMATICALLY BE REMOVED FROM THE PROGRAM AND MUST RE-APPLY.

Our partner vets are located in Pemberton and Squamish, which means our animals need rides to get to and from their veterinary appointments!
