Advanced Dog Enrichment Attendant

Purpose:  The position of Advanced Dog Enrichment Attendant for Whistler Animals Galore (WAG) is designed to aid in the care of the dogs by providing safe walks that also include training and mental stimulation for all dogs.

Responsibilities:

  1. Coordinating with shelter staff before each shift
  2. Interaction with dogs/handling and grooming of dogs
  3. Hand feeding or treat training
  4. Mental games/stimulation
  5. Physical stimulation (walking)
  6. Monitoring of dog behaviour and communicating with staff

Time: The Advanced Dog Enrichment Attendant volunteer will complete their shift between 9 a.m. and Noon. This shift must be at least 2 hours in length and the volunteer must complete at least 1 shift every week for a minimum of 3 months.

Qualifications:  Eligible candidates will have a basic understanding of dog behaviour, a willingness to learn their dog training routines, and of course a love of dogs. Volunteers must be physically able to walk dogs, and be able to handle untrained dogs, dogs with behavioural issues, dogs healing from surgical procedures, and stressed animals.

Support Provided: Training for this position will be an initial hour-long orientation session as well as a second training session with a dog trainer. Additional in-shelter training may also be required.

Advanced Cat Enrichment Attendant

Purpose:  The position of Advanced Cat Enrichment Attendant for Whistler Animals Galore (W.A.G.) is designed to aid in the care of the cats, involving training and socialization. It may also involve some feeding and cleaning to maintain a clean and comfortable environment for everyone.

Responsibilities:

  1. Grooming/brushing of cats
  2. Some small training exercises
  3. Feeding (at certain times) or treat training
  4. Cleaning of the cat rooms such as changing of litter boxes and blankets, cleaning of cat trees, and providing fresh water
  5. Monitoring cat behaviour/progress and reporting to staff

Time: The position will be a 2 hour shift between 10 a.m. and Noon. The position will require at least 1 shift every week for at least 3 months.

Qualifications:  Eligible candidates will have a basic understanding of cats and their behaviour, show a love for cats, have a willingness to learn about cats, and be comfortable working with a variety of different people and cats.

Support Provided: Training for this position will be an initial hour-long orientation session as well as a second training shift.

Opening Assistant

Purpose:  The position of Opening Assistant for Whistler Animals Galore (W.A.G.) is designed to aid in the care of the animals by completing morning feeding and general cleaning tasks involving both dogs and cats.

Responsibilities:

  1. Assisting with feeding of breakfast
  2. General socialization with shelter dogs and cats
  3. Doing dishes
  4. Doing laundry
  5. Assisting staff with cleaning of dog kennels and cat rooms(With clean blankets/fresh water/toys/litter box/etc)
  6. Other cleaning (May include vacuuming/dusting/etc)
  7. Assisting staff with any other tasks needed

Time: The position will be a 2 hour morning shift beginning at 8 a.m. It will require a minimum of 1 shift each week for at least 3 months.

Qualifications: Eligible candidates will of course have a love of animals. They will also have a basic understanding of dog and cat behaviour, and a willingness to learn basic training routines. Volunteers must be physically able to perform cleaning duties and must be able to work with all cats and dogs.

Support Provided: Training for this position will be an initial hour-long orientation session as well as a second training shift.

Closing Attendant

Purpose: The position of Closing Attendant for Whistler Animals Galore (W.A.G.) is designed to aid in the care of the animals by completing end of day feeding and general cleaning tasks involving both dogs and cats.

Responsibilities:

  1. General socialization with shelter dogs and cats
  2. Ensuring overnight/sleeping areas for the animals are properly set up  (with clean blankets/fresh water/toys/litter box/etc)
  3. Assisting with feeding of dinner
  4. Doing dishes
  5. Doing laundry
  6. Other cleaning (may include vacuuming/dusting/etc)
  7. Assisting staff with any other tasks needed

Time: The position will be an afternoon shift from 4:30 to 6 p.m. It will require a minimum of 1 shift each week for at least 3 months.

Qualifications: Eligible candidates will of course have a love of animals. They will also have a basic understanding of dog and cat behaviour, and a willingness to learn basic training routines. Volunteers must be physically able to perform cleaning duties and must be able to work with all cats and dogs.
