A Shelter Full of Hope and Promise

Rest In Peace, Diesel

It is with great sadness that we would like to report the passing of Diesel, a dog who was brought medical aid too late.

Diesel spent weeks in pain and suffering, wandering around his community blind and in distress. He was seen stumbling, wandering, and having seizures… collapsed in ditches or on peoples’ front lawns. His owners were aware of his condition but were unable or unwilling to pay for his medical care.

Diesel had a few concerned citizens notice him, but when rescue groups were finally contacted, he had left that area and could not be located. When he finally was brought to the vet, it was too late for treatment and he was compassionately and humanely euthanized, his suffering ended.

WAG would like to remind everyone that animal abuse, according to the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, includes them being “…injured, sick, in pain, or suffering…” and not providing them with proper veterinary care.

We live in and around communities with veterinary clinics and animal rescue groups that are willing and able to take over this care if owners are unable or unwilling, or if there is no owner at all. To not make use of these community services is considered Neglect, and therefore Animal Cruelty, under the law.

Please remember:

If your dog is sick or injured, you are responsible for providing them with care, or calling a rescue organization, such as WAG or PAWS, to take over their care.

If you see an animal that is injured, sick, or otherwise in distress, please try to locate the owner asap.

If no owner is located, or they are unwilling or unable to intervene, please contact one of your local animal rescue organizations immediately.

If the animal is at large, please secure them safely until the animal rescue group can get to the location.

If your animal is injured or sick, please do not put off taking them to the vet or seeking assistance immediately. Injuries and illnesses can get much worse if left untreated, and can often cause permanent, avoidable damage.

We are all responsible for the well-being of our community members, whether they be children, people, or pets.

If you would like to donate in memory of Diesel, consider donating to our Mount Currie Animal Wellness Clinics Fund, which provides veterinary care, including vaccinations and spay/neuter vouchers for low-income Mount Currie residences in need.

Thank you for your support.
